Most Sydney homeowners we meet have already tried outdoor lighting once. A run of solar spikes along the path, a flood at the back corner, maybe a pair of wall lights either side of the front door. Then a wet season hits, half the fittings cloud over, the timer drifts, and the back garden goes dark again by ten.

This outdoor lighting design guide is for property owners who want to do it properly the second time around. It is shaped by what our licensed Sydney sparkys see on jobs every week, from federation terraces in the Inner West to north-facing decks in the Sutherland Shire. The goal is to help you brief an electrician with confidence so the finished result earns its keep for years.

Outdoor lighting design starts with three jobs

Before fixture types and Kelvin numbers, get clear on what each part of the property actually needs. On site we sort outdoor lighting into three jobs, and almost every fitting on a good plan does one of them well.

✔ Safety lighting keeps stairs, slopes, paths and pool surrounds visible without glare.

✔ Security lighting covers side passages, back gardens and entry points, ideally with motion sensors so you are not running flood lights all night.

✔ Feature lighting picks out the parts of the property you actually want to look at, like a sandstone wall, a frangipani, a timber pergola.

The most common mistake we see on existing installs is asking one fitting to do all three. A bright security flood pointed at the back door is not feature lighting, and it is not pleasant safety lighting either.

Outdoor lighting design built for Sydney weather

Sydney has a humid coastal climate with hard summer storms and salt-laden air anywhere east of Parramatta. The cheap outdoor fittings we are called out to replace tend to rust through in a season or two, usually around the screws and gaskets first. For an LED downlight installation or an exterior fitout, we steer clients toward marine-grade or properly IP-rated bodies for anything within a few kilometres of the coast.

Worth keeping in mind:

✔ IP65 is a sensible minimum for any fitting exposed to direct rain.

✔  Aluminium and powder-coated steel hold up better than plain steel near the coast.

✔  Recessed fittings in eaves and soffits stay drier and last noticeably longer than surface-mounted equivalents.

A fitting that looks great in the showroom under fluorescent light will tell you nothing about how it ages on a salty north-east corner of a Bondi semi.

Get the placement right before the cabling goes in

Placement is where most DIY outdoor lighting falls down. A few rules from our own job sheets we keep coming back to:

1. Wash, do not blast. Up-lights work best when the fitting is close to the wall and pointed straight up, not angled like a spotlight.

2. Path lights belong below knee height. Anything taller throws glare into your eyes as you walk.

3. Cross-light feature plants. Two soft lights from opposite sides flatten harsh shadows on a tree or shrub.

4. Keep sensors off the driveway. Motion sensors aimed at a public footpath will trigger on every passing dog walker.

Outdoor cabling sits under the AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules and has to go in via a licensed electrician, so this is the wrong stage to improvise. If you are renovating, agree placement before the slab goes down or the deck gets boarded.

Choose colour temperature like a designer would

Warm 2700K light flatters sandstone, timber and render, which is why we recommend it for most Sydney facades. Cooler 4000K reads as harsh on a residential frontage but works for commercial entries and carport security. Mixing temperatures across one facade is the fastest way to make a beautiful house look cheap at night.

One temperature on the house. One on the garden. That is the rule that quietly does most of the work.

Dimmable drivers are worth the small upcharge. They let you tune brightness for entertaining versus everyday, and they extend fitting life.

Brief your electrician the right way

A good outdoor lighting plan starts with a walk around the property at dusk, not a parts list. When you brief Olympic Electrical, the conversation we want to have covers:

✔  Which zones need safety, security, or feature lighting.

✔  Where you currently entertain or want to entertain.

✔  Any landscaping or hardscape changes coming up.

✔  Whether you want app or smart-home control, or simple dusk-to-dawn timers.

You get a fixed price quote before any work starts, so you can compare fittings, talk it through with your partner, and approve the job knowing exactly what is included.

Ready to plan it properly? Get a free quote from Olympic Electrical and our licensed Sydney sparkys will walk your property, agree the zones, and design lighting that looks right and lasts.
