LED downlights are meant to be the set-and-forget upgrade. You swap out the halogens, the power bill drops, and the ceiling looks neater. Most of the time, that is exactly how it plays out. But when something goes wrong, a flicker after dinner, a faint buzz behind the kitchen island, a downlight that simply refuses to turn on, the cause is rarely what most homeowners assume.
After more than a decade fitting and servicing downlights across Sydney homes, from older brick-and-tile places in the Inner West to newer builds out in the Hills District, our team sees the same handful of issues come up week after week. The good news is that most LED downlight problems have a recognisable signature. Once you can match the symptom to the likely cause, you know whether it is a five-minute fix or a job for a licensed sparky.
Flickering Lights Are Almost Never a Dud Globe
Flickering is the most common complaint we get on the phone, and it is also the most misunderstood. Homeowners often assume a faulty light fitting, swap it out, and find the new one flickers too.
LED downlights respond to tiny voltage changes almost instantly, while old halogens masked those same fluctuations because of their hot filament. So the flicker was often there all along. Your new LEDs just made it visible.
The three usual culprits we run into in Sydney homes are:
✔ An incompatible dimmer, especially older leading-edge dimmers wired up for halogen loads
✔ A failing LED driver in the fitting itself, common in cheap imported globes after a year or two
✔ Supply ripple from the network, where Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy injects a control signal that some unfiltered LEDs pick up as a flash
If only one circuit flickers and it is on a dimmer installed more than five years ago, the dimmer is the prime suspect. If the flicker happens at the same time each day across multiple rooms, ripple control is worth investigating with an LED downlight installation specialist who can fit a filter.
A Buzzing or Humming Noise Means Something Is Mismatched
A faint buzz coming from the ceiling or the wall plate is your downlights telling you the electronics inside them are not getting along with the rest of the circuit. We get this callout most often in homes where a previous owner mixed and matched globes and dimmers without checking compatibility.
If the buzz is at the dimmer, the dimmer itself is almost always wrong for the load. LED-rated trailing-edge dimmers from quality brands like Clipsal, HPM, or Legrand usually clear it up straight away. If the buzz is at the fitting, the driver is failing or the LED was never designed to handle the wattage drawn by the rest of the circuit.
A persistent buzz is never just an annoyance. It is a low-grade fault, and low-grade faults shorten the life of every component on the circuit.
Downlights That Won’t Turn On at All
When a single downlight goes dark while the others on the same switch keep working, the issue is usually local to that fitting. Either the driver has failed or a connection inside the ceiling has worked loose. On older Sydney circuits we open up, loose connections at the loop-in point are surprisingly common.
When the whole bank of lights drops out together, look at the switchboard first. A tripped breaker is the most common cause, and it almost always points to a fault on the circuit rather than the lights themselves. Repeatedly flicking the breaker back on without finding the cause is exactly how minor faults turn into burned wiring.
Overheating, Ceiling Stains, and the IC-Rating Trap
This is the one we treat most seriously. Halogen-era ceilings across Sydney still have non-IC-rated fittings buried under blown-in insulation that was added later. LEDs run cooler than halogens, so the short-term fire risk is lower, but the long-term risk of heat building up around a non-rated fitting is very real, and it is the first thing we check on any retrofit job.
Signs to watch for include yellowing around the rim of the downlight, a faint scorch smell after the lights have been on for a while, and downlights that cut out after twenty or thirty minutes (the thermal protection has kicked in). If your home has loose-fill or batt insulation in the roof and you have not had the fittings checked since they were installed, it is worth a professional inspection. IC-4 or IC-F rated fittings are the only safe option in an insulated ceiling under current Australian standards.
Colour Temperature That Looks Off
Mixing globes from different batches or brands is the most common cause of one downlight looking warmer or cooler than the others. Even within the same product line, manufacturers shift colour temperature slightly between production runs, which is why we always order matched sets for a job rather than singles off the shelf.
If you are replacing a single failed globe in a row of five, replace all five with a matched set. It costs a bit more upfront and saves the headache of staring at a kitchen ceiling that looks like a colour swatch the rest of its life.
When to Stop Troubleshooting and Pick Up the Phone
A flicker that comes and goes is one thing. A burning smell, a breaker that trips the moment you reset it, scorch marks around a fitting, or any sign of heat damage in the ceiling space, those are signs to stop and call a licensed electrician immediately.
