DIY vs Professional Electrical Work: What Can You Do Yourself?
Under the NSW electrical safety rules, the list for homeowners is very short. Think plug-in-level stuff:
✔ Changing a light bulb
✔ Replacing the batteries in a battery-powered smoke alarm
✔ Resetting a tripped safety switch or circuit breaker (and if it trips again straight away, stop and call us)
✔ Plugging in and unplugging appliances

Why DIY Electrical Work Is Dangerous (and Illegal) in NSW
Doing electrical work without the right licence breaks the law in NSW, and penalties can apply. Check with NSW Fair Trading for the details. But the legal side isn’t the biggest worry. The real risks are these:
1. Electrocution. Live wires can seriously injure or kill. Switching off at the wall is not always enough, because a mislabelled circuit or a bad connection can still leave something live.
2. Fire. A loose connection, the wrong cable or an overloaded circuit can run hot inside a wall for a long time before anyone notices. By then the damage is done.
3. Insurance and resale headaches. If a fire or damage is traced back to unlicensed work, your insurer may question the claim. Check your policy wording and ask your insurer. Unlicensed work also has no Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, which can cause trouble when you sell.
What Electrical Tasks Need a Licensed Electrician?

Your switchboard is the heart of the home’s electrical system. Any work involving switchboard upgrades, circuit breaker replacement or adding safety switches (RCDs) must be done by a licensed electrician.
✔ Safety Systems
Mains-powered smoke alarms, security wiring and emergency lighting need professional installation so they work when you need them. Smoke alarm rules in NSW have specific requirements, so check with NSW Fair Trading or Fire and Rescue NSW.
