Castlecrag is a peninsula of houses: 97.4 per cent of dwellings counted in 2021 were separate houses, against 65.6 per cent across NSW, and 63.3 per cent had four or more bedrooms. Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin planned the suburb from 1921, and early homes used local stone or Griffin’s patented Knitlock concrete blocks, often under flat roofs. That leaves very little roof space for cable. We handle careful rewiring, board replacements, garden lighting and circuits for later extensions.

Business activity is thin on the ground here. There is the row of shops along Edinburgh Road, the Quadrangle site being redeveloped, Castlecrag Private Hospital, and schools such as Glenaeon and the Montessori campus. For shops and small practices we provide commercial electrical repairs, lighting upgrades, data points and emergency exit lighting checks.

Same-day service reaches all of Castlecrag, including the castle-named lanes south of Edinburgh Road. Urgent jobs we see: power lost after a gum branch falls on a garden line, a safety switch dropping out in a damp stone basement, or an old ceramic fuse overheating in a Knitlock house.
Castlecrag clients are mostly families in large, owner-occupied houses: 48.6 per cent are owned outright and another 38.5 per cent carry a mortgage. What they ask of an electrician is precision. Owners of Griffin-era homes want new circuits hidden without chasing into irreplaceable stonework, while people who rebuilt in the decades since want induction kitchens, better outdoor lighting and chargers in the garage. We are the Castlecrag electrician who takes the time to work out how each house was put together.
Streets such as The Rampart, The Parapet and The Redoubt follow the natural contours, so vans often park uphill and gear is carried down steps. Mature bushland in the reserves means storm damage is a real risk, and when a fault is dangerous we send an urgent electrician fast. Our crew covers Castlecrag and every suburb across the North Shore.

With 63.3 per cent of Castlecrag homes having four or more bedrooms, boards juggle ducted air, second living areas, kitchens and home offices. We split heavy appliances onto dedicated circuits so one fault no longer blacks out the house.
The Griffins set aside about 20 per cent of the peninsula as parkland. Tall trees in reserves like Castlehaven Reserve mean storms bring branches down, so we inspect outdoor cabling and garden lighting after heavy weather.
Castlecrag is bounded on three sides by Middle Harbour, and many homes step down sandstone slopes. Moisture seeping into lower-level rooms can trip safety switches, so we find the wet fitting rather than guessing.
The shops facing the Quadrangle site on Edinburgh Road serve the whole peninsula. We handle lighting, extra power and exit sign checks for tenants, working around opening hours so customers are not disrupted.

Sandstone and Knitlock houses built after the Griffins arrived in 1925 are familiar ground for our licensed team, and we understand how thick masonry and flat roofs change the way cable must travel.

Each quote starts with a site visit. A modest Griffin cottage on The Barbette and a two-storey rebuild on Edinburgh Road get separate, fixed written prices, because the effort is so different.

Fallen branches from reserves like Retreat Reserve and Burrabru Reserve can take out garden lines. When a Castlecrag fault is dangerous we come quickly, weekdays and Saturday mornings.

More than 250 customers have trusted us, including Castlecrag families referred by neighbours on the same winding street. Local word of mouth matters in a suburb this close-knit.

Wiring buried in stone walls is costly to reopen, so our lifetime labour guarantee matters here. If our workmanship fails in your Castlecrag home, we come back and put it right.

Call or book online and mention any stairs, steep paths or heritage features. Many Castlecrag homes sit below street level, so we allow extra time for carrying gear down.

We look over the board, cable routes and wall construction, then explain choices plainly. A fixed written figure follows, so you know the cost before a single tool comes out.

We arrive at the agreed hour. Tight bends on The Bulwark and The Citadel limit parking, so we choose a legal spot that keeps neighbours’ driveways and the bus route clear.

Stone floors and timber joinery get covered, rubbish leaves with us, and you receive the compliance certificate with a short plain-English note on the new circuits.

Spyro started out in 2017, and today the business runs with five-plus licensed electricians. Castlecrag suits a team that likes to plan: homes here range from 1920s stone and Knitlock originals to large modern rebuilds, and no two cable routes are alike. We take on board swaps, whole-house rewires, lighting design for gardens and decks, and EV chargers, always thinking about how the finished work will look.

Fifteen Castlecrag houses were designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, built from site stone or Knitlock block with flat roofs, and several, such as Duncan House on The Barbette and Fishwick House on The Citadel, are heritage listed. Walls like these cannot simply be chased for new cable, so rewiring needs planning.

Every job we finish in Castlecrag is covered by a CCEW, which NSW requires for all electrical work. Replacing or altering a board triggers the AS/NZS 3000 rule that final subcircuits need RCD protection, and many older Castlecrag homes gain that protection for the first time when we swap their board. We fit Type A safety switches, since Type AC has been banned from new work since 1 May 2023.
Pricing is fixed and in writing before we begin. Castlecrag shows why a rate card is pointless: fitting new lights in a 1920s stone cottage off Sortie Port may mean surface conduit and careful drilling, while the same lights in a modern rebuild near Edinburgh Road drop straight into an open ceiling. We inspect, explain, then commit to one figure.
Whether you own an original Griffin house, a rebuilt family home or a shop on Edinburgh Road, our licensed team can plan the job properly. Expect a written fixed quote, respectful work around stone and timber, and lifetime labour cover. Ring 02 8999 3691 and book your Castlecrag visit.
The questions Castlecrag homeowners, heritage house custodians and local shop tenants put to us most. If yours is not covered here, call us on 02 8999 3691.
Quite often. We work weekdays between 7am and 5:30pm and Saturdays from 7am until 2pm. Phone 02 8999 3691 early and we can frequently fit a Castlecrag call in the same day, since the peninsula sits a short drive from our regular Willoughby jobs. Faults that are hazardous, like a hot switchboard or smoke from a fitting, are slotted in first.
We give a fixed price in writing after seeing the work, never a guess over the phone. Homes here differ enormously, from stone walls and flat roofs with no ceiling cavity to modern rebuilds with generous roof space. Once we understand the access and the scope, we commit to one figure, and it only moves if you decide to add more work.
Yes, with planning. Early Castlecrag homes were built with stone found on site or with Griffin’s Knitlock concrete blocks, and many have flat roofs with little space above the ceiling. We look for existing conduits, floor voids and joinery lines to carry new cable, and use discreet surface conduit only where there is no other option. Old rubber-insulated wiring is removed so it cannot cause trouble later.
Possibly. Several Castlecrag houses are individually heritage listed, including Buhrich House II on Edinburgh Road and The Glass House on The Bulwark, and Willoughby City Council applies controls to protect the suburb’s character. Internal electrical work is usually straightforward, but visible external changes such as new lights or meter boxes may need consideration. Check with council, and we will work to any conditions.
They can. Castlecrag was planned with around 20 per cent of its land as reserves, and mature trees overhang many gardens. Storms bring branches onto garden lighting and outdoor power, and roots can damage buried cable. We use suitable underground cable and conduit and check outdoor circuits after severe weather. Lines between your house and the pole are the network’s responsibility, so report damage there to Ausgrid.
Yes. Most homes here are detached, and many have a garage or carport. We confirm the supply and board can handle the load, then run a dedicated circuit with the right protection. On sloping blocks the garage can sit a long way from the board, so we plan the cable route and quote it precisely before starting.
In Castlecrag this is usually water finding its way into an outdoor fitting or a lower-level room cut into sandstone. The safety switch is doing its job by cutting power. Do not keep resetting it. We isolate circuits one at a time, test insulation and find the damp point, then replace or reseal the fitting so the problem does not return.
Yes. Many Castlecrag gardens back onto reserves, so owners generally want soft, low-level light rather than floodlights. We install weatherproof LED fittings, step lights and path lighting on timers or sensors, with cable run in conduit away from roots. Good lighting also makes steep steps from street to front door safer at night.
We do. Only about 10.9 per cent of Castlecrag homes are rented, but every household benefits from working alarms. In split-level houses we fit hard-wired smoke alarms on each storey and interconnect them, so an alarm on the lower level sounds upstairs too. Rental owners also need alarms repaired within two business days of being told of a fault.
Our labour is guaranteed for the life of the installation. Spyro has led the business since 2017, the team has grown to five-plus licensed and insured electricians, and more than 7,000 projects are behind us. Paperwork matters too: for each Castlecrag job we submit the CCEW that NSW rules demand.
