Ermington was orchards, poultry farms and nurseries until 1945, when the Housing Commission bought the land and subdivided it. Street after street of single storey brick houses went up for returned servicemen and their families, and those homes still make up most of the suburb. They are around eighty years old now, which is the age at which original switchboards and cabling start to cause problems.
The rest of Ermington looks nothing like that. Close to four in ten dwellings are townhouses or apartments, most of them in the Riverwalk and Broadoaks development built on the old naval store land off River Road from 2006. We work on both, and the questions we ask before quoting are different for each.

The brick homes built in the Housing Commission era were wired for a household that owned a fridge, a radio and not much else. Plenty still run the board they were built with: rewireable ceramic fuses, no safety switches, and nowhere near enough powerpoints. The signs are familiar. Extension leads doing permanent work, fuses dropping out when the kettle and the heater run together, and a switchboard nobody has opened in decades. That is where most jobs in Ermington start.
The Hillside Estate is a special character area under the City of Parramatta’s planning controls, so the appearance of the street is protected. The controls discourage painting or rendering the original brickwork and limit what can be built forward of the building line. None of that prevents electrical work, but it does change how we handle anything visible from the footpath. We will tell you before we start whether your address sits inside the character area and what it changes about the job.

Close to four in ten Ermington dwellings are now townhouses or apartments, most of them in the Riverwalk and Broadoaks development off River Road. That stock is modern, so the work leans towards downlight upgrades, appliance installation and data cabling for people working from home.
Ermington also carries a high share of rental properties, which makes annual smoke alarm compliance steady work here.
We also work throughout the Northern Suburbs, including West Ryde, Meadowbank and Ryde.
Olympic Electrical services absolutely all suburbs of Sydney. From Doonside to Dover Heights and everything in between!
No. The controls deal with the appearance of the house and the street, not the wiring behind the walls. Where they matter is anything visible from the front, such as moving a meter box or running external conduit, and we plan that work around them.
A switchboard upgrade with safety switches first, then extra powerpoints so the extension leads can come out. Whether it needs a full rewire depends on the condition of the original runs, which we can tell you after inspecting the board and the roof space.
Smoke alarms are the main one. Landlords in New South Wales have to keep working smoke alarms installed and checked every year, and we handle that alongside any repairs the property needs.
We offer same day service across the Northern Suburbs and run a emergency line on 02 8999 3691.
