Only 82 of the 5,889 occupied dwellings counted in Redfern at the 2021 Census were free-standing houses. Terraces and townhouses made up 28.6 per cent and apartments 68.1 per cent, with a two-bedroom layout the most common at 42.8 per cent. Victorian rows such as Fitzroy Terrace on Pitt Street sit beside public housing towers and newer blocks around Gibbons Street. In practice we rewire narrow two-storey terraces, add circuits for renovated kitchens and fit compact replacement switchboards into hallway cupboards and cramped meter recesses.

Trade clusters along Redfern Street east of the station and down Regent Street toward St Paul’s Place, with offices around the TNT Towers and Gibbons Street. We handle cafe kitchen circuits, shop lighting, exit signage and office fit-out wiring, and time noisy work to suit opening hours on the strip.

Redfern calls booked with us early usually get same-day service. Typical urgent faults here: a Pitt Street terrace board whose rewireable fuses keep blowing, lights dead in a walk-up stairwell off Walker Street, or water tracking through an old ceiling rose after a storm.
Redfern has 13,072 residents and rents dominate, with 61.9 per cent of homes leased. That shapes our week: property managers booking alarm swaps between tenancies, owners of Young Street and Phillip Street terraces asking for honest advice on ageing cable, and strata committees near the station chasing a fault through a shared meter room. As a Redfern electrician we also keep small kitchens and studios on Regent Street running.
The east side, around Redfern Park and Chalmers Street, leans toward single-fronted terraces with renovated rear extensions. West of the railway line and along Gibbons Street it is towers, podium shops and units. We carry gear for both, and an urgent electrical callout gets the same careful testing as a planned job anywhere across the City of Sydney.

Almost three in ten Redfern dwellings are terraces or townhouses. We replace tired rubber and cloth cable, add earthing and new circuits, and keep the original joinery and street facades intact.
Apartments make up 68.1 per cent of Redfern homes. We work on unit switchboards, tenancy submains and corridor lighting, confirming with strata which parts belong to the lot owner before starting.
With 61.9 per cent of dwellings rented, agents call us to swap expired smoke alarms, test safety switches and supply dated paperwork for the landlord between leases.
Shopfronts on Regent Street and Redfern Street often run on supply sized decades ago. We split out kitchen and refrigeration loads and add compliant exit and emergency lighting.

Each of our licensed tradespeople has worked inside Redfern terraces from the late 1800s, where lath ceilings, shallow brick chases and shared party walls call for patient, tidy cable routes.

A tradesperson inspects your Redfern job before any quote is written, so a Walker Street unit and a Pitt Street terrace each get a fixed written figure matched to their real access.

When a Redfern Street cafe loses power at opening or a tenant reports sparking, we reshuffle the day so an electrician gets there as soon as the route allows.

Landlords, tenants and business owners from Redfern are among our 250+ customers, and plenty of our bookings near Redfern Park arrive through word of mouth from neighbours.

Labour on every Redfern circuit, fitting and board we install carries a lifetime guarantee, including new wiring hidden behind restored plaster in older terrace homes.

Ring us with your address and mention any rear lane gate, intercom or building manager. We then pick a slot that fits your tenants, your roster or the shop’s trading hours.

Once the electrician has seen your board and the cable paths, you receive one written figure for the Redfern job and a plain explanation of what the work involves.

Street parking near the station fills quickly, so we allow time to find a spot and arrive within the promised window, phoning ahead if Cleveland Street traffic slows us.

Drop sheets protect polished boards, offcuts leave in our van, and you receive the compliance certificate with a short summary of every circuit we touched.

Local pockets we cover in Redfern
Nearby suburbs we also serve

Redfern has been part of our patch since Spyro set things going in 2017, and it only got busier as the crew grew beyond five licensed electricians. The suburb asks for range: a strata meter room one morning, a terrace rewire the next, then a cafe needing an extra circuit before a weekend. We like that variety, and we keep the same electrician on your job from quote to certificate so nothing gets lost in a handover.

Spyro speaking. Whether your Redfern terrace keeps blowing fuses or your unit’s breakers trip whenever the kettle runs, ring 02 8999 3691. I will have one of our licensed people test the circuits and find the cause.

Redfern grew as a borough from 1859, and 96.7 per cent of its homes are terraces or apartments, many still on boards with rewireable fuses and patchy RCD cover. Bringing those boards to current standards is the job we quote most often in 2016.

NSW law ties a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work to every Redfern visit, and we issue it without being asked. In terraces from the 1800s we often uncover joins between old rubber cable and modern wiring; those get repaired or written up for you. Replacing or altering a board triggers the AS/NZS 3000 requirement for RCDs on final subcircuits, and since 1 May 2023 Type AC units cannot go into new work.
Our Redfern quotes are fixed and written down before anything is started. A phone estimate rarely holds here: new downlights in a Gibbons Street apartment might be a short visit, while the same fittings in a two-storey Pitt Street terrace mean crawling a tight roof space and chasing brick. We see the home first, then commit to one number.
Fuses still in a Redfern terrace, an agent’s alarm deadline, or a Regent Street kitchen needing more power? Phone 02 8999 3691 to book an inspection. One of our licensed team will look at it on site, hand over a firm written price, and our labour guarantee never expires.
Redfern tenants, terrace owners, strata committees and shopkeepers raise these points with us most. If yours is not covered here, call us on 02 8999 3691.
Frequently. Our weekday hours are 7am to 5:30pm, Saturday runs 7am to 2pm and Sunday is a day off. Redfern sits on routes our vans cover constantly, so phoning 02 8999 3691 before lunch tends to land a visit that afternoon. Mention any burning smell, hot outlet or main switch that will not reset, since those faults are handled ahead of routine bookings.
We look first and price second. Two Redfern jobs that sound alike can be very different: a new circuit in a recent Gibbons Street unit may be quick, while the same request in a Victorian terrace can involve lifting boards and threading cable through solid brick. After the inspection you get a fixed amount in writing, and it changes only if you ask for extra work.
Many Redfern terraces were rewired piecemeal, so a single house can mix rubber-insulated cable, newer PVC runs, rewireable fuses and one lonely safety switch. Overloaded kitchen circuits, damp in old ceiling roses and loose joins are frequent causes. We test each circuit, show you which ones are sound and quote a board upgrade or partial rewire that suits the house.
That depends on where the fault is. Wiring from your unit’s own board to your rooms usually belongs to the lot owner, while main boards, submains, lift and stairwell lighting are normally common property. With 68.1 per cent of Redfern homes being apartments, we trace faults to a clear point and give both owner and strata manager a written finding.
Yes. Redfern contains heritage conservation areas, and items such as Fitzroy Terrace and Redfern Post Office are on the State Heritage Register. Internal rewiring is usually straightforward. The care goes into keeping meter boxes, conduit and outdoor lights off the street frontage and protecting original plaster and joinery. Check approvals with the City of Sydney if the work touches the facade.
Every storey needs a working alarm, a tenant’s report of a faulty unit starts a two business day repair clock, and alarms older than ten years from their build date must come out. Hard-wired alarms can only be installed by a licensed electrician. With most Redfern homes rented, we often do alarm testing between tenancies and leave dated records for the agent.
It depends on parking. The 2021 Census recorded 0.8 vehicles per Redfern dwelling and few terraces have off-street spaces, so a charger usually needs a rear lane garage or a basement bay with strata consent. Where there is a spot, we measure how much headroom the board has, lay a separate feed to the bay and fix the charger to the wall. Chargers on public footpaths are outside what we install.
We can. Older shopfronts along Redfern Street and Regent Street often need more capacity than their original supply provides. We plan circuits for coffee machines, ovens and cool rooms, add LED lighting, exit signs and emergency lights, and schedule disruptive work outside trading so the business keeps serving.
Every member of our team holds a NSW electrical licence and full insurance. Since Spyro opened the doors in 2017, the team has finished more than 7,000 projects. Labour on each job is guaranteed for life, so if something we installed in your Redfern home or shop plays up, we return and fix it.
Every street in Redfern 2016 is ours to cover, from Redfern Street, Regent Street, Gibbons Street, Chalmers Street, Elizabeth Street, Pitt Street, Young Street, Walker Street, Renwick Street, The Block, Redfern Park and the streets around Redfern station. We also work daily in Eveleigh, Waterloo, Darlington, Surry Hills, Chippendale, Alexandria, Moore Park and Zetland.
